Hendaye beach: 3.5 km of fine sand
With its 3.5 km of fine sand and gentle slope, Hendaye beach is one of the safest on the Basque coast. Its gentle slope makes for easy bathing and a popular spot for families with children.
Facing the famous Deux Jumeaux rocks, you can enjoy an exceptional panorama of the cliffs of the Basque coastline. The waves, accessible to beginners and experienced surfers alike, allow everyone to discover the joys of surfing in complete safety.
The wide, recently renovated seafront is the perfect place for a family stroll. Walk or cycle along the cycle path to the Sokoburu esplanade, where the thalassotherapy center, casino and numerous restaurants and tapas bars await you.

Hendaye offers a wide range ofwater sports to suit all tastes: surfing, stand-up paddling, sailing, kayaking, jet-skiing, towed buoys… The bay’s configuration, protected from heavy swells, makes it the ideal playground for beginners or those wishing to perfect their skills.
For surfing, several schools welcome you on the beach, including theLehena surf school, which offers courses for all levels. Thanks to its regular, accessible waves, Hendaye is often referred to as the “green slope” of surfing : perfect for learning with confidence.
The bay of Txingudi is ideal for learning to sail and kayak. Hendaye’s marina, the third largest in Aquitaine with 890 berths, offers direct access to all these nautical activities.

Top places to visit in Hendaye: the best walks
Hendaye is the starting point for exceptional hikes, accessible to all levels. The GR10, the famous long-distance hiking trail through the Pyrenees, starts here. The Vélodyssée, a cycle route along the Atlantic coast, also ends in Hendaye after a spectacular ride along the Basque coast.
For a family outing, take the coastal path that winds between creeks and cliffs to Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The panoramas of the ocean and the Rhune mountains are breathtaking.
Don’t miss the Domaine d’Abbadia, a 65-hectare protected natural area overlooking the ocean. Explore its paths in search of the small animals that inhabit it, then visit the majestic Château-Observatoire d’Abbadia, a neo-Gothic masterpiece designed by Viollet-le-Duc and listed as a Historic Monument.
The town also boasts a remarkable architectural heritage: Pierre Loti’s house, the neo-Basque villas on the seafront and the great Hendaye palm tree, the only one of its kind in Europe.
